Gaganjit Singh, a Shiromani Akali Dal MLA and son of Tamil Nadu Governor SS Barnala, was on Saturday arrested on the charge of raping his domestic help, police said.
Gaganjit, who represents Dhuri constituency in Punjab, was arrested following a complaint lodged by the maid servant, they said.
In a statement made before the police, she alleged that she was criminally assaulted by Ganganjit between 11.30 am and 12.00 am, police said.
After the statement, the maid, 40, was medically examined which confirmed the rape.
In her complaint, she alleged the rape took place when she was massaging Gaganjit.
Earlier, the family of SS Barnala, the former Punjab Chief Minister, took the maid to a hospital, where she was admitted for some time.
Police said Gaganjit was arrested under section 376 IPC (rape). He will also be subjected to medical examination.
