A government order to this effect has reached Basic Education Office here.

According to sources in the office of secretary, Basic Education, primary teachers will not be engaged by the government for the works like census because it affects teaching at primary level.

However, they, being the "Dharmguru" as defined by the state government in the order itself, will be engaged in pulse polio, election, natural calamities, school building construction, cleanliness and literacy works.

It may be recalled that in academic session 2005-2006, teaching suffered a lot in the wake of teachers' involvement in government's census work.

However, through the latest order the teachers have been asked to maintain quality of teaching and academic atmosphere at their respective schools.

Notably in January this year the government also issued instructions to the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education not to engage primary teachers for High School and Intermediate examinations duty for 2006 in order to maintain teaching at primary schools.

The step had been taken in view of several problems faced by the primary schools at the time of their home examinations.

Usually, the home examination begin right after Broad examinations mostly in April end or at the beginning of May. Hence, the courses are to be completed in a hurry without any revision.

As a result the quality of teaching and examination got affected at primary schools.

This time, the Education Department officers disclosed, the government did not want to engage primary teachers in UP Board examinations.

Earlier as many as 390 primary teachers were asked for the Board examination duty in Allahabad out of 6000 primary teachers in the State.
