Hindustan Times came across many such cases in the ongoing camp organised as part of the nationwide ‘Drive Against Bribe’ at the district headquarters here on Tuesday.

Manikeshwari Devi, a sanitation worker at Dashaswemedh ward, retired from service on January 31, 2004. She said she had submitted an application with the Varanasi Nagar Nigam on May 22, 2006 for releasing her gratuity.

But, she still remains deprived of her gratuity. Her son turned up at the camp to get justice through the Right to Information Act.

HT approached the authorities concerned in a bid to know the reasons for the inordinate delay.

“There are hundreds of such cases in which retirement benefits are pending due to lack of funds in view of the fact that the Nagar Nigam does not get grants against the salary of its employees,” deputy municipal commissioner PK Srivastava told HT.

He said efforts were being made to ensure the backlog was cleared.

He said that he had submitted an application to the incharge of the administration at the RSMT on February 23, 2006 to correct the marksheet, but nothing had been done yet.

“The correction is beyond the powers of my institution. The UP Technical University has given a date for such correction,” Rajarshi School of Management Technology administrative officer Dr SK Dubey told HT. No senior officer of the UP Technical University was available for comment.
