A civil engineer with over three decades of service in the Army, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Major-General BC Khanduri (Retd) was entrusted with the task of implementing the prestigious National Highways Development project by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He took the task with the precision of a bull's eye and pushed his staff to adhere to the deadlines.

Khanduri was born on October 1, 1934 in Dehradun and is the son of Late Jai Ballabh Khanduri and Durga Devi Khanduri. He completed his education from Allahabad University and thereby did a Long Defence Management Course of Military Engineering from Pune. Later, he was married to Aruna Khanduri and has a son and a daughter.

Elected to Lok Sabha from Garhwal in 1991, 1998 and 1999, he has been the party's Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha. He was made the Minister of State for Road Transport (Independent charge) in November 2000 and was elevated to the Cabinet rank in May 2003. And road-building being a dreary chore, nobody from the media has cared to focus on Khanduri's work.
