Some officials of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) seem to have concocted an overtly simple method to identify "ISI agents" - especially the ones in their midst.
Shoukat Ali, a CISF jawan, recently complained to the inspector general of the force that constant persecution from his superiors had forced him to attempt shooting himself with a firearm.
"I was being referred to as a terrorist, and my superiors used to even call me Laden," said Shoukat to HT.
He was then posted in Kulti, Burdwan district.
Shoukat's brother Liaquat, 27, is a member of the CRPF's CoBRA unit - stationed in Dantewada, Chattishgarh.
In a letter of complaint addressed to the IG on May 18, Ali said he was refused a loan for his sister's marriage.
"The ASI and SI asked me that if I became a militant, who would repay the loan. I was shocked and humiliated," the letter read.
The complaint mentioned that Shoukat was empowered by the CISF deputy commandant to keep the beard, in accordance with religious customs.
"I adhered to the condition that I would be required to submit a photograph every six months," he added.
