Months before former Congress MP and minister of state Matang Sinh was arrested on Saturday in the Saradha chit fund scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the agency had also included his name in its classified Undesirable Contact Men (UCM) list for his alleged irregular activities.

Confirming this, a senior CBI source said Sinh’s name was added last year to the list as per a “decision of the then agency director Ranjit Sinha” on the basis of a review of his alleged “financial irregularities and use of clout in influencing postings.” The UCM list includes people who are allegedly involved in irregular and corrupt acts while dealing with government agencies and it is sent to all key ministries for reference, said the source. When contacted by HT, Sinha declined to comment.

Sinh has denied charges related to any wrongdoing.

The list is shared with officers of the rank of deputy secretary and above in the government. Any type of contact with those in the list is prohibited for public servants and bureaucrats.
