The three-day long encounter between terrorists and security forces at Behrampore near Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramullah district ended on Monday with the killing of an army officer, two terrorists and one civilian. Seven residential houses and other structures were also destroyed in the clash. Police said that the slain terrorists were senior commanders, Abu Tahir and Abu Umair of Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The encounter had begun at 10.30 am on Saturday when troops of 29-RR, led by commanding officer Col GS Sarna, came under firing from terrorists during house to house searches in the village. Around half a dozen soldiers including Col Sarna were injured in the terrorist attack. The colonel later succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital. A defence spokesperson said that the commanding officer gunned down one terrorist in injured condition.

The troops along with special operation group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir tightened the siege around the village and launched a major offensive against trapped terrorists. The troops targeted terrorist hideouts specifically, who kept on changing their positions from one house to another. The clash continued through the day on Sunday. The local residents had fled from their houses to safer places after the gun-battle rattled the village.
