As the city gears up for the Commonwealth Games, college students are not to be left behind. Many are taking up
the challenge of being good hosts and being part of history, earning a quick buck in the process.
Students from all around the city are joining the ‘Earn While You Learn’ programme to become volunteers during the upcoming games. They will be trained in basic etiquette, history of Delhi, disaster management and first aid, among various other things.
“We will be witness to such a big event for the first time. And I want to pitch in to make it a success. I want to be part of history. Plus it will be a good opportunity to earn some extra dough,” says Samina Keskar, a student at Jesus and Mary College.
“Students will be paid Rs 1,000 after they complete the 21-day training session and pass the examination that follows,” says S Inayat A Zaidi, a professor at the Jamia Milia Islamia University, who is conducting one of the training sessions. “Around 130 students have enrolled for the programme,” he adds.
Some students pursuing tourism are undertaking the training to add to their experience. “I’m a student of tourism and hospitality and this training is directly related to my course,” says Alan Wheeler, a student at the College of Vocational Studies. “The money, though a little less, is certainly a motivation,” he adds.

{{/usCountry}}Tanshri Susheel Kumar, another DU student, feels that the programme is a good opportunity to learn. “We are being educated about various topics like the history of Delhi, rules of games, effective communication, etc. Being paid for learning so much is great,” she says.
The training programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism.
