Benazir decries harassment of Hindus

The former Pak PM says Hindus in Larkana, Sindh, are being forced to change their political loyalties.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister and PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto has said that Hindus in Larkana, Sindh were being forced to changed their political loyalties.

She said that complaints had been coming in that some prominent members of the Hindu community living in Shahdadkot and Larkana were receiving threatening phone calls asking them to renounce their association with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) or face dire consequences.

The callers also made extortion demands from them, reports the Dawn.

Noted Hindu family of Warand Mal living in the neighbourhood of Ramesh Lal, a member of the National Assembly, was targeted a few days back.

Warand’s son was shot and wounded, but the attackers somehow managed to escape, she said.

Last month, another Hindu youth was shot dead in Larkana by unknown assailants, and no action was ever taken on the complaints filed by the affected Hindu families, she added.

Benazir said threatening calls and letters were being routinely sent to the Hindu families asking them to give up their association with the PPP. She said she was shocked at the manner in which the state apparatus was working against the Hindu community in Larkana.
