This May, three letters showed us how colossal a combination of cheap and chic can get. Wtf! in Khar became an overnight hit offering almost-dive prices at a fuss-free, yet fashionably cool bar. The bar has now opened in Andheri inside a lavish bungalow located at 7 bungalows in Versova.
It opens up a spacious version of its first avatar, but design wise remains the same. The air-conditioned zone has cherry red diner-style booths and is plastered with movie posters and signboards in Tamil, while the open-air area is a jigsaw of wooden furniture. At the sequel, the smoke-friendly al fresco becomes the focal point, while the inside zone is shrunk to accommodate barely three tables. From being the budget Olive, this new Wtf! comes close to being a budget Out of the Blue.
The pub was unusually packed for a weekday. The music was cheery and the service quick and friendly. The prices and menu is similar to that of their Khar counterpart. The cocktail menu features usual suspects like Mojitos, Cosmopolitans and LITs. Though easy on the pocket (Rs 200), they aren’t quite the perfect mix. Our Martini (Rs 200) came without its olive garnish and could have done well if it was shaken or stirred. The LIT (Rs 350) was strictly passable, while the Mojito (Rs 200), was minty. The highball of the night was the Daiquiri (Rs 200), which made for a good mix. Stick to your Old Monk (Rs 80) and Beer (Rs 120) and you’re in for a value-for-money night out.
From the munchies menu, the signature Lisa’s Sri Lankan Beef (Rs 160) was not available, but we made up for the loss with its close cousin, Jesse’s Kerala Beef fry (Rs 160), which comprises coconut-flecked, bite-sized pieces of tender meat cooked in curry leaves. The distinctly homemade taste made for a great snack. The Mean Ass Chicken (Rs 170) lacked the punch it takes to be bad-ass, while the BBQ Pork Spare Ribs were served cold. Go in for the Mini-burger platter (Rs 200) if you want tummy fillers. The quantity doubles with the veggie fare. The Crispy Chilly Veg (Rs 135) was a mouthful of potatoes, while the Spicy Chilli Cheese Croquettes (Rs 135) was the toast of the night and went down well with the drinks. In all, this is a new place to party for those with pint-sized pockets and keg-sized appetites.
