Jailed IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife has written to Union home minister P Chidambaram, urging him to ensure the safety of the suspended policeman, whose life, she felt, was in danger.

The state authorities were “systematically targeting the whistleblower cop at the behest of chief minister (Narendra Modi)”, Bhatt’s wife, Shweta, wrote, alleging that Ahmedabad police commissioner Sudhir Sinha had been masterminding the victimisation operation.

She said in the letter her husband was being mentally and physically tortured by the Ahmedabad police, which took him for questioning and then placed him under arrest on September 30.

“Sanjiv has spoken the truth about the Gujarat riots and the Haren Pandya murder case and this is precisely the reason why he is being victimised by the state authorities,” she told the media at her residence.

“I had written to the state director general of police, local magistrate and also Ahmedabad police commissioner about Sanjiv. But none responded,” she said.

He said Bhatt had taken him to state Congress president Arjun Modhvadia, who had asked him to what the policeman said. In the version of Bhatt, Modi said at a meeting the Hindus should be allowed to vent their anger at Muslims for the Godhra train-burning case.

Gujarat’s acting director general Chittaranjan Singh said if needed, the police would call Modhvadia for interrogation.

The arrest came three days after Bhatt claimed in another affidavit he had “documentary evidence of the role of some politicians and police officials in Haren Pandya’s murder (in 2003)”. A local court will hear Bhatt’s bail plea on Tuesday.
