TALK OF crime hot spots may not immediately flash Bhopal on your mind. But you are living in a crime city. Bhopal, Indore and Jabalpur have been ranked among the top five cities of the country in incidence and rate of total cognisable crimes.
Of course Indore figures at the top of the list of 35 crime cities with a population of over 1 million, Bhopal at the third place and Jabalpur at the fifth, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The rate of total cognisable crimes for Indore is 766.1, much ahead of Vijaywada that is put at second place with a rate of 578. Bhopal’s rate of criminality is 556.2 and Jabalpur’s 544.5.
DGP Swaraj Puri said he has not seen the NCRB report. “The NCRB analyses various aspects pertaining to crime all over the country and brings out statistical findings,” Puri said. The rank of criminality has been decided on the basis of total incidence of cognisable crimes in comparison to the population of the City.

Although the number of criminal cases registered in the three cities of the Madhya Pradesh are not too high, its lower population in comparison to metros is the reason for higher crime rate per 1 lakh population.
