Haryana has always been targeted because of skewed sex ratio, but Bhora Kalan, a village in Gurgaon district has set an example by improving the sex ratio. The village panchayat was honoured for the same on the Republic Day.
The gender ratio of village Bhora Kalan was adjudged best in the year 2010. The ratio was 903 girls against 1000 boys on Thursday, during the Republic Day celebration. As per the policy of state government each district having best sex ratio with more than 5,000 population get a cash prize of Rs 1lakh.
For the villagers and panchayat of the village it is a moment of pride. While talking about it Vijay Vir, sarpanch of the village said, “We never worked for prize or to impress anybody. This was a sensitive issue and we felt that something should be done to create awareness”. He further said, “Personal visit to each and every house of the village managed to yield results.”
As per the figures of first eight months of 2011 under the Central Registration System (CRS), the sex ratio of Haryana was 826 girls to 1000 boys in the age group of 0-6 years, in comparison to 833:1000 of the corresponding period. For 1,79,715 boys, just 1,49,745 girls were born in 2011. Even the census figures released in March, 2011 revealed that the state has 830 girls for each 1,000 boys in the age group of 0-6 years.
