Student leaders and students said the recent fee hike was against the principles of BHU founder Pt Madan Mohan Malviya.

“The university administration is acting against the principles of Malviya who wanted to educate even the most deprived section of the society in this institution,” they said.

The agitators accused vice-chancellor Prof Panjab Singh of playing with the future of meritorious, but poor students of eastern Uttar Pradesh.

“The vice-chancellor should withdraw the fee hike, so that poor students can pursue higher studies in one of the most prestigious institutes of the country,” said the demonstrators.

“People of eastern UP were delighted to get Prof Panjab Singh as the BHU vice-chancellor because he hails from east UP (Mirzapur).

But, the recent fee hike has exposed his capitalist mindset,”said former BHU student leader Ajit Singh, who led the demonstration. He demanded that the vice-chancellor withdraw the fee hike with immediate effect.

Student leaders have warned the BHU administration they will launch a massive agitation if the fee hike is not withdrawn with immediate effect.

The Academic Council of the BHU approved a two-to-four-fold hike in the fee structure from the current academic session 2006-07. The decision was taken at a meeting on July 13.
