The 32-year-old Bhupathi quit the squad last month after the national federation paired top woman player Sania Mirza with Leander Paes, his former doubles partner and Davis Cup captain.

"Yes, I have decided to play in the Asian Games," he told Reuters on Friday from the southern city of Bangalore.

Bhupathi said he was persuaded to play in the Games by top national sports officials.

The multiple winner of men's and mixed doubles grand slam titles has been paired with the second-ranked woman player Shikha Uberoi in the games to be staged next month in Doha, Qatar.

Paes and Bhupathi won three of their four grand slam men's doubles titles together, but split due to personal differences after a superb 1999, when they reached the finals of all four majors and won two.

He was also frustrated after Paes turned down his request to re-unite on the tour to prepare for a serious medal bid at the 2008 Olympics.
