The flood situation worsened in Bihar on Saturday as swollen rivers inundated vast swathes of countryside in seven districts and claiming 11 lives.

The flood situation worsened in Bihar on Saturday as swollen rivers inundated vast swathes of countryside in seven districts and claiming 11 lives.

Around five lakh people were affected as flood waters inundated Kishanganj, Saharsa, Supaul, Sitamarhi, Purnia, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur districts as rivers Bagmati, Kosi, Kamala Balan and mahananda were flowing above the danger level at different places, submerging several villagers in the past two days.

Altogether 11 people have so far perished in the current spell of floods with six deaths from Muzaffarpur alone, while one each in Sitamarhi and Supaul and three in Kishanganj.

According to central water commission report, major rivers Bagmati, Kosi, Kamala Balan and Mahananda were flowing above the danger mark at different places along their course.

While Kosi was flowing above the danger mark at Basua, Bagmati breached the danger level at Benibad and Hayaghat. Similarly, water level of Kamala Balan flowed above danger mark at Jhanjharpur, Kursela and Baltara while Mahananda flowed above danger mark at Dengraghat.

State Water Resources department claimed that all the embankments in Bihar were safe.
