The domestic help and her husband, a marginal farmer, have also been arrested.

Nurse Manju Vishnoi, 40, told the police during interrogation that she had sold another infant to her domestic help, Kamla Saini, 40, last December.

The police have recovered the infant sold on Monday and handed her over to her parents.

Bijnore superintendent of police Raj Kumar told HT, “An investigation is under way to ascertain if Manju Vishnoi is part of a gang involved in selling of infants or whether she committed the crime to oblige her maid.” Vishnoi said in her statement to the police that she handed over the infant to Saini at the behest of the infant’s grandmother, who wanted to get rid of her seventh granddaughter.

The Bijnore unit of the Indian Medical Association has given a clean chit to the proprietor of the nursing home, saying he informed the police and helped recover the infant.
