Surendra Mohanty, vice chairman of Aska panchayat samiti, was sitting on his verandah when the assailants on a motor cycle struck, they said.

Mohanty was killed as the attackers, whose number was yet to be ascertained, fired from close range before fleeing the spot, they said.

Police in nearby areas have been alerted while patrolling in and around the town intensified as part of the efforts to nab the accused, they said.
