A 12-hour bandh called by the BJP to protest alleged mass rigging by Congress supporters and tampering with electronic voting machines in Silchar parliamentary constituency on Tuesday paralysed normal life with high tension prevailing in the district.

The bandh called by BJP Cachar district committee began at 6 AM and was "total with no untoward incident reported so far", official sources said here.

The bandh has been called to protest "mass rigging, destroying of EVMs and attitude of some administrative officials and police personnel," BJP party candidate for the constituency, Kabindra Purukayastha, said.

He alleged that zonal officers were moving around with tampered EVMs before depositing it and when the BJP protested Congress supporters clashed with their party workers.

Official sources said that two zonal officers were assaulted by BJP workers on Monday night when they came to deposit the EVMs at Cachar college. The BJP was protesting that the officers were helping the Congress to tamper with the machines which were not sealed.

"The BJP leaders and supporters were shown the machines and there was no irregularity in it. There was scuffle between the BJP and Congress supporters and the two zonal officers were injured in the incident," she added.
