The main Opposition BJP on Wednesday accused the ruling UPA of "sectarian and myopic management" of internal security as it listed "conflicting" statements from different quarters of the government about Pakistan's suspected involvement in Mumbai train bombings.

Party spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad took "offence" to the "language" of persistent queries from reporters at the party's daily media briefing as to how intrusions by Pakistanis had occurred in Kargil when BJP was in power at the Centre.

The BJP leader cited nine statements, including those of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, National Security Advisor MK Narayanan, Home Secretary VK Duggal and then Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, seeking to support his charge that UPA lacked a unanimous view on Pakistan's suspected role in Mumbai blasts.

"This comical ambivalence highlights a more serious malaise, namely ad hoc sectarian and myopic management of our internal security, which has caused a great deal of discomfort to our security forces. The UPA must learn to speak in one voice," Prasad remarked.

"Naturally this creepy uncertainty at the highest level continues to give leverage to Pakistan to indulge in their design to foment, encourage and sponsor cross-border terrorism at great rist to our national security," he said.

"One fails to understand what impression one would have from these vacillations being indulged at the highest level on the issue of terrorism, which has direct bearing on our security forces," he said.
