THE INVESTIGATION into Professor H S Sabharwal murder case gained momentum on Monday with the CID reportedly identifying nine more student leaders involved in the assault. Besides ABVP leaders, two BJP corporators are also among those who could be grilled.

Although, the CID refused to divulge anything about the progress in the investigation, police sources said the suspects have been identified on the basis of statements of two arrested persons and some others.

Corporators Sonu Gehlot and Satyanarayan Chouhan, ABVP activists Bhanu Bhadoria, Vishal Rajoria, Hemant Dubey, Rizwan Nagori, Sanwar Patel, Sudhir Yadav and Pankaj Mishra are likely to face trouble, sources said.

The move could intensify the political battle between the Congress and BJP, as till now only ABVP people were on the suspect list, but with speculation now being on BJP corporators it would boost Congress enthusiasm and provide it with another stick to beat the State Government.

Although, police are officially maintaining that only two accused - Shashiranjan Akela and Vimal Tomar - have been named in the case, sources believe that the CID is thinking of a suitable time to move to the other identified people.

The action could be postponed for three days in view of Congress bandh tomorrow and Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s visit to the City on September 7. The grilling of BJP corporators could trigger protest by the party workers and the confrontation between the supporters of BJP and Congress might bring hard times for the police.

Meanwhile, hundreds of supporters of Gehlot and Chouhan staged protest at the Dewasgate and Jiwajiganj police stations last night after the police called the corporators to come before them. BJP city president Shiva Kotwani was leading the agitators.

Although, police officials told them that both have been called for their statements on the murder case. Tomar sent to jail: Meanwhile, Vimal Tomar, who was produced before the court of JMFC First Class R S Madia, has been sent to judicial custody for 15 days. Akela is already under judicial custody.

The police on Monday arrested four more NSUI activists in connection with rioting at the college. These are Sandeep Lot, Jitendra Parmar, Vinod Chorasia and Rai. All were released on bail by the court later.

Digvijay, Scindia in Ujjain today: Massive security arrangements have been made for Tuesday bandh call given by the Congress to protest against the killing and demand to handover the investigation to CBI. The agitation is likely to hot up tomorrow with senior party leaders Digvijay Singh and Jyotiraditya Scindia arriving.

The leaders would visit the professor’s house besides addressing a public meeting at Gopal Mandir at 4 pm. Local Congress leaders also took out a rally this evening here garnering support in favour of bandh call.

Akela’s students protestThough the investigating agency has arrested Akela on charges of murder, his students feel he could not be a killer. Students of Lokmanya Tilak Higher Secondary School on Monday took out a rally to the Dewasgate police station and handed over a memorandum requesting to free their ‘sir’ (Akela).

Akela teaches mathematics to class 9 and 10 students at the school. The students contended that his behavior with the students in the school was sympathetic and he could not commit such heinous act.
