Divergent approaches of BJP leaders Rajnath Singh and L K Advani over Nandigram came to the fore on Monday as the former demanded dismissal of the Left front government in West Bengal but the latter disfavoured it.
Rajnath Singh, the party president, said there was a constitutional breakdown in West Bengal and the Budhadeb Bhattacharya government should be dismissed.
"We demand the dismissal of the West Bengal government. What we are witnessing there is a constitutional breakdown," he told reporters in Bangalore.
"If land acquisitions for industrial purposes are done by the armed cadres of the (CPI-M) party, it is not good for the country. Therefore, I demand the dismissal of the state government," he added.
However, Advani earlier disfavoured dismissal of the West Bengal government, saying it would be unjustified. "It will not be apt to call for the use of article 356 (dismissal of government) in West Bengal," Advani told reporters on a special plane while travelling from New Delhi to Bangalore.
"Just because of one phrase (of Governor), one cannot jump to a conclusion," he said when asked whether the Bhattacharya government should be dismissed following Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi's stinging comments over Nandigram.
