BJP may not move a no-confidence motion against UPA government even in the event of Left withdrawing support on the Indo-US nuclear deal issue.
Some leaders in the saffron party strongly feel that any such action would be "a futile exercise" as they are convinced of the fact that the Left "will not allow the government to fall", party sources said.
Even after withdrawing the support, the Left can always decide in favour of abstaining from the voting and hence allow the government to sail through the motion, they said.
If the government wins a no-confidence motion moved by the opposition in such a volatile situation, it would help UPA to gain further legitimacy and sympathy which is the last thing BJP can afford, the sources added.
The strategists in the party are counting on price rise and recent increase in terrorist activities. They feel that the issues are good enough for the party to have substantial gains and the UPA government should be allowed to leave office on its own.
Asked if BJP would consider moving a no-confidence motion against the UPA government in the coming monsoon session in the wake of BSP's withdrawal of support and its stand-off with the Left over the nuclear deal, party spokesperson Ravi Shanker Prasad said, "no such deliberation has taken place in the party yet."
In the Lok Sabha, which has a strength of 543, the UPA enjoys support of 237 members -- 35 short of simple majority. In a situation of 59 MPs of Left parties abstaining from voting in any no-confidence motion, the UPA government still survives.
