The party also dubbed the decision to honour the MLAs as a gimmick of the Mulayam-led government in the election year. State BJP chief Keshari Nath Tripathi said that the party would boycott the function. He also said that Vidhan Sabha Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey was organising the programme at the behest of Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The BJP plea was that there was no respect for former or sitting legislators of the opposition during the SP rule. They were being humiliated, arrested, lathicharged and implicated in false criminal cases. In fact, the police and other administrative officers were dancing to the tune of the SP.

Tripathi said that he had issued directives to the party district units to tell all present and former legislators not to come to the State Capital to attend the function.

Tripathi further said that the three-year SP rule had been best suited to ‘mafia, terrorists and corrupt officials’ besides strengthening Muslim vote bank. He said that a few industrialists were enjoying all facilities and concessions though no industry had come up in the State.

BJP leaders discussed the names of possible party nominees for the coming Vidhan Sabha elections.
