The BJP on Friday demanded Karnataka Chief Minister N Dharam Singh be asked to take a vote of confidence on Saturday instead of January 27.
The BJP said it feared any further delay to let him prove majority support could be used by the Congress for horse-trading.
Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu, who returned from Karnataka after a coalition agreement with the JD(S) to topple the Congress-led government in the state, told reporters here that Governor TN Chaturvedi should issue fresh directions for such an exercise.
"We do not understand why Dharam Singh has been given a week's time to prove majority when a vote of confidence could be taken immediately with the Assembly being in session," Naidu said after a BJP national council meeting in New Delhi.
The BJP leader, who cited last year's events at Goa, Jharkhand and Bihar Assemblies, accused the Congress of attempts to retain power in Karnataka "by hook or by crook."
"The Governor's decision to allow him (Singh) this much time is undemocratic. Also, it may give the Congress an ample amount of time to attempt horse-trading. Therefore, we want that the vote should be held tomorrow itself," Naidu remarked.
