BL Joshi sworn in as new Meghalaya Governor

Banwari Lal Joshi was on Thursday sworn in as the new Governor of Meghalaya replacing MM Jacob.

Joshi, who was earlier the Lt Governor of Delhi, was administered the oath of office by acting Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court, Justice D Biswas at the Raj Bhawan in Shillong.

Soon after the swearing-in, Chief Minister DD Lapang welcomed Joshi with a brief speech.

Joshi responded by saying that he looked forward to have an innings of cooperation and goodwill with the people and government which will contribute to prosperity of the state.

The proceedings of Thursday's Assembly session were suspended in view of the swearing-in ceremony attended by the ministers, MLAs, senior officials and other dignitaries.

Born in a Rajasthan village on March 27, 1936, Joshi studied in Scottish Church College and University Law College in Kolkata. He started his career in 1957 with police service and worked with the Intelligence Bureau on matters related to Interpol, industrial security, United Nations correctional work and juvenile delinquency.

He worked in the Prime Minister's Office with Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi for over four years and with the Union External Affairs Ministry as the first secretary in High Commissions of India at Islamabad and London and as head of Chancery in the Indian embassy at Washington.
