IN VIEW of the threat of bomb blasts sponsored by militant outfits in the State capital, the Lucknow police have intensified searches at vital government buildings, shopping malls, railway stations and the airport in the city.
Police teams accompanied by bomb disposal and sniffer dog squads carried out searches today at shopping malls and multiplexes in Hazratganj and Gomti Nagar. Police personnel were also deputed outside the Amausi airport to keep a close watch on visitors and to check the vehicles there.
Top police officers have issued directives to conduct searches in the morning and evening shifts regularly. Private security guards at cinema halls and multiplexes have been given certain tips to check the visitors properly at the entrance and also to move regularly inside the building, keeping a close watch on the activities of the people. Besides, policemen in plainclothes also have been deputed at these places for maintaining vigil.
Briefcase causes panic
A BRIEFCASE lying abandoned in Naza market of Hazratganj triggered panic among shopkeepers and shoppers on Saturday noon.
Normalcy was restored only after the police opened it and found that it was a stolen briefcase for which a complaint was lodged at the local police station four hours back. Senior sub-inspector (SSI) Hazratganj and a constable rushed to the market after receiving the information and opened the briefcase, which contained only documents. The SSI called state president of the Samajwadi Vyapar Sabha VPh Gupta who had lodged a complaint about his briefcase being stolen from outside a shop in Hazratganj. Gupta later identified that it was the same briefcase.

THE Government transferred five IPS officers today. ASP Meerut Ajay Kumar Mishra becomes ASP Sultanpur, while ASP Kanpur Nagar, Modak Rajesh Dinesh Rao has been posted as SP Sravasti. ASP Varanasi, Nachiketa Jha, goes as SP Economic Offences Wing, Kanpur.
