Addressing a demonstration here on Wednesday, Vaiko, a staunch supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), said there was nothing wrong in the youth taking to arms and joining the LTTE in its fight against the Sri Lankan Army.

While Vaiko accused the Centre of not taking steps to ensure a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, the ruling DMK said it would organise a human chain here on Thursday to protest against the military operations in which civilians have been the worst hit.

The human chain would be led by DMK chief and state Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, despite doctors having advised him against straining himself following his recent spinal surgery.

The fate of about two lakh Tamils trapped in the designated ‘no-fire-zone’ declared by the Sri Lankan army has gained precedence over poll polemics and campaign strategies in the state.

Joining the chorus for the Sri Lankan Tamils on Wednesday, AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa slammed both the DMK and the Congress at the Centre for their “silence” on the issue.

“If Mr. Karunanidhi really cared for the Tamils, he should even at this late stage pressure the Centre to ask the Sri Lankan government to immediately order a ceasefire in Sri Lanka as the Tamils there face the prospect of being wiped out completely,” Jayalalithaa said in a statement here.
