THE DISTRICT police have drawn up a blueprint to ease traffic bottlenecks in the city.
Senior superintendent of police Raja Srivastav has decided to implement one-way traffic on busy roads. Fifty more trained traffic police personnel will be deployed to deal with the situation at important crossings.
Sources said the SSP had issued orders to relieve 10 sub-inspectors, and 70 police constables from duty at police stations. They will discharge the role of traffic control sleuths.
The SSP has asked his subordinates to solve the problem of traffic jam at any cost. He hinted the police might take strict steps to introduce a new system.
It is for the first time the police have shown the will to solve the problem. So far, residents were only given assurances by senior officials.
They said the shortage of staff had compounded the problems.
The SSP admitted that the unavailability of signals had added to the chaos on both sides of important road.
The police officials have identified one-way routes and entry of heavy trucks will be banned on important roads, as they increase the inconvenience of commuters.
Municipal commissioner Anand Vardhan said the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation had already started an exercise to remove encroachments from both sides of the road for smooth operation of traffic at different posts. He stressed the need for public awareness for a sustainable solution to these problems.
