The BM Birla award for 2004 in Mathematics has been shared by mathematicians Dr Vijay Kodiyalam and Dr Venapally Suresh of Chennai and Hyderabad respectively.

This was stated by the BMB Centre, which also announced prizes in four categories -- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Hyderabad on Wednesday, each carrying Rs 1 lakh in cash.
The prize in Physics was also shared by Dr Abhishek Dhar and Dr Rajesh Gopakumar of Bangalore and Allahabad while the Chemistry and Biology awards were won by Dr Sundaram Balasubramaniam of Bangalore and Dr Manohar R Wani of Pune.
Dr Kodiyalam is one of the most original and creative mathematicians in India, who formed a strong collaborative partnership with VS Sunder in the area of subfactors, which led to many results in the subject and Dr Suresh has done significant work in the general area of quadratic forms which is internationally recognised, the centre said in a release.
Dr Dhar, Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, has made outstanding and incisive contributions to the understanding of non-equilibrium transport, self-organised critically, the loop erased self-avoiding random walk, and the problem of persistence in non-equilibrium systems.
Dr Gopakumar of Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, is among the best string theorists in the world, while Dr Balasubramaniam of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, has pioneered the study of condensed phases using large scale 'abinitio' molecular dynamics.
