BMC changes budget disbursement plan

FOLLOWING UNCONTROLLED expenditure, cash-strapped Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to disburse one-twelfths payments of budget every month. This has been done as corporators recommended most of the expenditure in the initial months of the fiscal.

FOLLOWING UNCONTROLLED expenditure, cash-strapped Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to disburse one-twelfths payments of budget every month. This has been done as corporators recommended most of the expenditure in the initial months of the fiscal.

Although BMC increased its revenue income by Rs 10 crore during the last fiscal, higher expenditure has been creating problems. Generally, various departments spend most of their budget during the initial months of the financial year. This trend has been creating problems since the past several years.

Departments start the revised budget after six months of fiscal. So, the BMC has decided it would pay only one-twelfth amount in a month to contractors of various departments. BMC officials believe this would stop the extravagance by the departments.

During the financial year 2005-06, BMC administration realised revenue worth Rs 46 crore. This was about Rs 10 crore more than the revenue realised during fiscal 2004-05, which was Rs 36 crore. According to officials, the BMC’s Engineering Department and Water Works Department have failed to control their budget.
