Private clinics and nursing homes operating from Mumbai’s residential buildings just got a reprieve — the municipal corporation said it will amend civic rules so they don’t have to shut down.
On April 6, the Supreme Court had directed clinics and nursing homes operating from residential buildings to build a separate staircase or lift within six months or shut down.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said, “It is not practically feasible for private clinics to create a separate staircase or lift. We will amend the Development Control rule to protect private clinics.”
The civic chief put up a letter before a BMC group leaders’ meeting on Wednesday, during which it got a unanimous go-ahead.
Mumbai has about 1,200 clinics and nursing homes that share entrances, staircases or lifts with building residents.
By BMC estimates, while Mumbai’s population is 1.4 crore, its supply of hospitals beds is just 12,000, against the requirement of 14,000.
Despite the shortage of 2,000 beds, vast numbers from the middle-class as well as the upper-middle class prefer private clinics to expensive private hospitals.
