Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh is in the eye of the storm following allegations levelled in a upcoming book that he donated between $1 - 5 million to the Clinton Foundation in 2008 as a quid pro quo to push for the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Quoting from American writer Peter Schweizer’s new book, titled Clinton Clash, the New York Post reported that Singh was the conduit for powerful interests in India pushing for the approval of the Indo-US nuclear deal. When the US Congress was debating the landmark bill, Hillary Clinton was co-chair of the senate India caucus and an eminent senator. She supported the bill, which was subsequently passed by the Congress with an overwhelming majority.
Denying the charge, Singh told a TV channel: “I am a law abiding citizen who has not violated any law of the land. I am a high-profile person who has been scrutinised legally and administratively by the high courts of Calcutta and Allahabad, the Kanpur sessions court, the UP police and the Enforcement Directorate. Nobody could prove anything against me”.
The Post quoted the Clinton Foundation as refuting suggestions of wrongdoing. The state department and the White House have refused to comment on the controversies surrounding the Foundation’s funding.After Clinton announced her presidency bid, The New York Times reported that “a flow of cash” made its way into the foundation during a deal that gave the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the US.
