The Gurgaon police are yet to arrest either plot owner Rohtash Tayal or the contractor who dug the borewell that claimed the life of 4-year-old Mahi.
Police said both are absconding. Three police teams have been conducting raids in Dwarka and Najafgarh in New Delhi to arrest Rohtash.
Om Prakash, SHO, Manesar police station, said, “He is likely to be arrested tonight.”
On Sunday, the police had booked Rohtash Tayal on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304 of the IPC. The authorities have also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of the minor. As it is mandatory to seek the deputy commissioner's permission to dig a borewell in Gurgaon, according to court directions, a separate case of contempt will also be initiated against Tayal and the contractor.
Tayal had the borewell dug three months ago as there was shortage of water in the area. However, they struck a rocky patch at 68-feet so work was suspended and the borewell was abandoned without filling up.
He was contacted by the local authorities on the day Mahi fell into the illegally dug borewell but he later switched off his mobile and is currently in hiding.

{{/usCountry}}Incidentally, deputy commissioner PC Meena had constituted a team three months ago to look into illegal and uncovered borewells in Gurgaon. But only 538 borewells were sealed and dismantled and reports were submitted to the district administration. But none of the three illegal borewells in Kho village, including the one in which Mahi had fallen, were reported.
Authorities, however, blame the lapse on the unauthorised nature of the colony. RS Sangwan, district information and public relation officer (DI PRO), said, “The colony where the tragedy occurred was developed illegally and does not come under the jurisdiction of the municipal corporation.”
