Police said Aswani Patel, of Padaria village in neighbouring Chhatisgarh state, entered into the temple in the New Bus stand area on Tuesday and cut off his tongue.

The incident came to public knowledge when the temple priest entered the premises to perform evening arati rituals.

A bleeding Aswani was then taken to Ispat General Hospital for treatment.

His father, Rameswar Patel, has been informed.

The purpose of Aswani's visit to the steel city was not clear.
