Abhilash wanted to go back to Germany after appearing for his viva-voce examination on November 9 and solemnise marriage with the girl he loved.

However, the girl, working as the assistant project coordinator at the IIT-K, refused to marry him. Abhilash couldn’t take the rejection and committed suicide.

Earlier, it was believed parents of the girl had refused the marriage proposal. But the facts shocked everyone at the institute. Investigations by the institute authorities revealed that the girl in question loved Abhilash and had even consented to marry him. But later, she got involved with another IIT-K student and started ignoring Abhilash. Despite his best efforts, Abhilash failed to get her consent. The “breach of trust” forced him to take the extreme step.

The girl, who was said to be under severe depression, was likely to be ousted from her job. According to the institute’s faculty members, though these were personal matters, but once they come to light disciplinary action became unavoidable. Professor counsellors felt action was also necessary to send a clear message to everyone that the institute was meant for pursuing higher studies and not for indulging in such relationships, which may bring disrepute to the institute.

Meanwhile, mortal remains of Abhilash were consigned to flames at the Bhaironghat here on Wednesday morning. After collecting ashes of Abhilash, family members left for Kerala in the evening.
