Thai police on the resort island of Samui on Tuesday said the death of a British backpacker was probably not accidental, as authorities awaited the result of her autopsy.
"It's unlikely that this case was an accident but so far we have not issued an arrest warrant and are not interrogating any suspects," Major Thanongsak Aksornsom, chief investigator on Samui island said.
The body of 21-year-old Katherine Elizabeth Horton of Cardiff, Wales, was found floating in Lamai bay at 10:00 am local time on Monday (0830 hours IST) by a man who rents jet skis to tourists.
Thanongsak said police had confirmed reports there was bruising around Horton's head, but that may have been caused by her falling onto rocks from a cliff before she entered the sea.
"We are waiting for the forensic police to check around the site such as the bungalow and the site where the body was found," Thanongsak said.
Horton was last seen by a friend on Sunday night at the New Hut bungalow on famed Lamai beach.
Horton's body was at the National Police Office's forensic institute in Bangkok for the autopsy, police said.
A British embassy spokesman said police in Britain had notified Horton's family, while a consular official was dispatched to Samui on Tuesday to meet Horton's friends and assist the investigation.
