The BSF and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel exchanged a few rounds of fire following alleged intrusion by Bangladeshi farmers along the Indo-Bangla border in Assam's Cachar district, official sources said in Silchar (Assam) on Sunday.
A group of Bangladeshi farmers and cattle grazers tried to enter the Indian territory on Saturday night under the cover of darkness in the Kinarkhal area under Katigora police station.
Patrolling BSF personnel open fire on the intruders and forced them to go back after they refused to heed warnings, the sources said.
Sometime after the intruders went back BDR personnel opened fire from across the border to which the BSF retaliated and the shootout lasted for fifteen minutes.
There was no report of any casualty or injury from either side, the sources said.
A panic situation prevails among the villagers and the BSF has intensified patrolling in the area, they said.
Tension along the Indo-Bangla border along the three Barak Valley districts of Assam prevails since August 10 when two women were killed when their house was hit by a mortar fired by BDR men at Harinagar village of Cachar district.
Sporadic incidents of firing between BSF and BDR personnel have continued since then mostly following intrusion of Bangladeshi farmers to cultivate on Indian land.
