Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday criticised the media for making too much of her financial assets. She said they had been acquired following contributions from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers across the country.

Her remarks came after questions were raised about how she accumulated assets worth Rs 52 crore, which she declared a couple of days earlier, while filing her nomination for election as a member of the Uttar Pradesh House.

“The BSP workers began contributing small sums directly to me after they came to know that I had no funds. My workers asked me to use the money as I wanted,” she said.

A section of the media, which had benefited from the SP and BJP, was targeting her, she added.

“I am thankful to the BJP that got the CBI to raid my premises after implicating me in the Taj Heritage Corridor case,” she said sarcastically, adding that the raids had found nothing.
