Talking to mediapersons, the Imam came down heavily on both the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. There was hardly any difference between the Congress and the BJP, he said, adding, ‘ek khula dushman hai aur doosra chupa hua’.

Congress, he said, kept talking about getting Narendra Modi unseated but failed to do anything in this regard.

Accusing Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav of deceiving Muslims, he dubbed him a representative of the BJP and the RSS.

“Till now we have been supporting different political parties but nobody gave us anything. The time has come when Muslims should have a share in power politics,” he said without mincing words.

Though he termed his party as secular, but went on to add that politics and religion could not be separated.

Calling himself true a secular because of the support extended to a Hindu candidate, he said he was initially not in favour of his party contesting the civic body election but later had to give in due to internal pressure.

He said he chose to come to this city because of the Hindu-Muslim unity which this town boasted of.

Dispelling allegations that his party had communal overtones, he said, “Our support to a Hindu candidate nullifies all such allegations.

UDF has people from different religious backgrounds,” he added.
