Bush had his annual physical on Tuesday at the National Naval Medical Centre just outside Washington in Bethesda and received a clean bill of health from doctors despite gaining 2.5 kg.

"Doing fine. My health's fine. I probably ate too many birthday cakes," Bush said after the check up.

Bush weighed in at 89 kg and doctors believe Bush will remain healthy for the remaining two and a half years of his presidency, White House spokesman Tony Snow said.

"He's still healthier than we are," he said, adding Bush's cholesterol level was at its lowest ever.

Bush celebrated his 60th birthday July 6.
