George Bush’s remarks about increasing food consumption in India, Indian demand pushing up prices (May 4), is an admission that the Indian economy is indeed on the rise and so is the standard of living. But the rise in global food prices is due to the fall in output in many parts of the world, swapping food cultivation with bio-fuels and use of foodgrains as animal feed, mainly in the US and Europe. Bush must stop preaching to others and think about the health of US citizens for whom overeating is doing no good.

The way Bush is holding India responsible for the world food crisis is absurd. If Bush was a little more diplomatic, he could have said that “we are happy that India’s consumer index is going up as the living standard of its middle-class has increased. With a view to solve the food crisis, we should all sit together and plan out a strategy that helps both developed and developing countries alike.” This way he would not have received so much flak.

National crime region

Apropos of the editorial Bringing justice to her (May 5), after observing the ascending graph of crimes in and around Delhi, it would seem that the NCR has become the national crime region. The spate of crimes proves the inefficiency of the police in the region. Also, there is no coordination among the Delhi Police and the police of the neighbouring states of Haryana and UP. After committing crimes, criminals take shelter in states bordering Delhi. To reduce crimes in the city, the government must set up a unified police force for the NCR.
