President George W Bush on Sunday hailed the landmark Iraq elections as a "resounding success", saying the Iraqi people have braved all odds to overwhelmingly reject the anti-democratic ideology of terrorists.
He, however, acknowledged that the war-torn country had more distance to travel, spoke of the likelihood of more terrorist attacks and promised continued US support in the stabilisation process.
"Today the people of Iraq have spoken to the world, and the world is hearing the voice of freedom from the centre of the Middle East. In great numbers, and under great risk, Iraqis have shown their commitment to democracy," a visibly relieved Bush said.
Speaking from the White House hours after the polls closed, Bush said that by refusing to be intimidated by thugs and assassins, the Iraqis have "demonstrated the kind of courage that is always the foundation of self-government".
"Terrorists and insurgents will continue to wage their war against democracy and we will support the Iraqi people in their fight against them. We will continue training Iraqi forces so this rising democracy can eventually take responsibility for its own security," he said.
