Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI) has alleged that the government has not stood by on the commitment of providing compensation to the victims of Kishtwar violence based on the actual assessment of loss within a period of one month.
Talking to mediapersons on Wednesday, Arun Gupta, secretary general of CCI, said, "The chamber has come to know that the cabinet has taken a decision that in all such cases the limit of compensation will be between `2 lakh and `5 lakh irrespective of the extent of the total loss.
The decision further says that this compensation will be distributed equally between the owners of the shops and the tenants doing business in the shops. We have been given to understand that this order will be applicable retrospectively with effect from April 1, 2013. The chamber feels great betrayal of trust against the commitment of the government."
The chamber also raised concern over the government on arbitrarily imposing VAT on certain items on which it was not imposed in the budget. It took up the case with the finance minister, principal secretary (finance) and commissioner, VAT. The chamber was told that the case is under review and needful will be done soon. Unfortunately, nothing has been done in this regard, it added.
The chamber has threatened to give a strong message to the government that if the above-said issues are not addressed immediately, the trading community will be compelled to take drastic steps in the form of bandhs and non-cooperation.
