The Union cabinet will hold a special meeting on Sunday amid expectations that it may finally push the key anti-graft ordinances known to be pet issues of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Union law minister Kapil Sibal met President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday evening and reportedly discussed the ordinance issue.
Government sources added the special package for the residual state of Andhra Pradesh, as promised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Rajya Sabha, may also be taken up on an urgent basis.
Singh will leave for a two-day trip to Myanmar on Monday and the government would use the Sunday’s meet to clear the agenda.
Officials added while ordinances on all nine subjects, including Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Bill are ready, the government may push for ordinances on three-four items.
Gandhi is keen to push all six anti-graft laws including whistleblowers' protection bill and a law to curb bribes to foreign nationals and foreign offices.
Meanwhile, Shantaram Naik, chairman of the Standing Committee of Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice on Saturday wrote to the PM urging him to clear ordinances on Citizen Charters Bill and other key bills. He pointed out that these bills were stuck due to "no fault of the government".
