The information and broadcasting ministry has extended the deadline for digitilisation in four metros from June 30 to October 31, 2012.

A decision in this regard was taken on Wednesday following the difficulties being faced by stakeholders in meeting the new guidelines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), who is also a regulator for broadcasting sector.

The Trai in May 2012 had asked every cable operator to put in place a consumer complaint redressal system with a toll-free number having a web based complaint monitoring system. The Trai has also stipulated timeframe for various agreements between cable operator and multi-service providers to ensure transparent content and revenue-sharing module.

“Both these orders of Trai have not yet been substantially implemented. As a result, the installation of set top boxes has not picked up pace...” said a statement from the ministry.
