After making an aerial survey of the embankment, minister directed the officials to strengthen the embankment and raise the height by June 15. Merajuddin was reviewing the Irrigation department’s preparation to check the possibilities of the flood in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions.

Talking to mediapersons, Merajuddin said that senior officials were directed to make on-the-spot verification of ongoing work of the embankment, and chief engineer (irrigation) would camp in Gorakhpur twice a week to monitor the work.

He repeatedly said that the paucity of funds would not affect the work.

Minister had to face tough time and avoided direct reply to some questions raised by the mediapersons. He could not reply why had the government sanctioned Rs 1.33 crore for Gorakhpur against the demand of Rs 4.50 crore.

Merajuddin said that in 2003-04, the government had allocated only Rs 50 crore for flood prevention work and his government has allocated Rs 316 crore. He said officials were directed to complete the sanitation work of drainage.
