Divya Arora recently acted, directed and designed the sets of a play called Barefoot in the Park. The duration was two hours and Divya was on stage throughout. When asked to describe herself, she says, “I am a human being and I want to reiterate this fact.” For those who don’t know, Divya Arora is special.
“It seems I was born for the stage. It’s an intrinsic part of me. Professionally I started theatre in college (LSR). I was a part of the Spastics Society and thus took part in all the plays that happened.
“I suddenly realised that theatre is a very powerful tool – to communicate everything and anything. It gave me the direction and purpose to devote and dedicate my existence to. It’s surprising that people join personality development classes, I think when you are on stage, everything happens all at once.”
About Daman, her co-star in A Walk in the Park, a Neil Simon play, she says: “I have known Daman forever, or so it seems. We met at a production where there were 25 of us. But somehow it was just the two of us for each other. I totally love Daman.”
So what else is it that Divya does? “Well, it would be better if you did ask me what it is that I do not do. I dance, actually I jive, but that’s only with Daman. I have modelled for Aslam Khan for a combined show that he did for the able and the differently abled. I very strongly feel that fashion as a discipline should also include the disability factor. We too like dressing up.
“In fact, for the past few months, I have an idea germinating in my head — to hold a beauty pageant on the lines of Miss India for the differently abled. God willing it should happen soon.” Amen.
