The operator of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has slammed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) before Delhi High Court for citing “rising number of accidents” on the stretch as one of the reasons for taking steps to terminate a contract.
The Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSC), which operates the stretch, questioned how it could be blamed for speeding by drivers, drunk driving and unauthorised crossing by pedestrians.
The court is hearing a DGSC’s petition against the NHAI for terminating its contract for violation of agreement, unilateral financial decisions, inefficient tolling and rising accidents.In their reply to NHAI's allegations on Monday, the operator said, "Accidents have occurred on account of over-speeding, drunk driving, unauthorised crossing by pedestrians, etc. for none of which the operator has any enforcing right. Hence, this allegation is untenable."
The NHAI had claimed before Justice S Muralidhar that in January 2012, a total of 232 accidents occurred on the highway. There have been around 4,000 accidents since 2008, the NHAI added.
The Infrastructure Development Finance Company, which financed the project, volunteered to resolve all issues between DGSC and NHAI following, which the court deferred the hearing till May 30.
