The morning began with a sprint to the Grand Theatre Lumiere at 8.30 am for a screening of Oliver Stone’s Wall Street:MoneyNever Sleeps. I got there 20 minutes early and barely managed to get a seat. There was palpable excitement in the air as everyone waited to see what Stone had done with his iconic ’80s film.
The sequel starts superbly with Gordon Gekko, played by Michael Douglas, leaving prison. The guard hands him his belongings, which include a pre-historic cell phone. Unfortunately, the film does not sustain the momentum. The performances are terrific though. The actors are compelling. And there are several killer lines. But the film does not have the clarity or emotional heft of the first one. There is lots of chatter about sub-prime mortgages and the moral hazards in the business. And all this makes for dreary cinema! Still this is clearly a role Michael Douglas was born to play. Watch it for him.
